Default power steering 96

Power steering issues:
last season, PS would whine after a track session. I dumped the fluid, put in red line fluid. problem solved.

this season........
well I thought the problem was solved. now the power steering whines all the time! cold or hot. on track or off track.

is the pump going ??
I know some 96's had hose issues, but I never busted a PS hose yet, and they all look fine.

does it need better cooling? maybe a larger cooler? or just replace the pump? I do track the car, and love it !!!
thank you.

Mine is in the shop now to replace pump or the pressure regulator.
I have the same story as you.

We'll see.

In case you didn't read my other thread--pump is gone. I suspect yours is too.

Power steering systems on the late C4 seem to be marginal.

I have gone thru ~6 pumps, blown (cracked) 4 lines, 1 failed flow control valve, and tried several type of fluids.

I've used brand new GM pumps, GM remanufactured pumps, and now have been using an Autozone reman pump. I also run readily available Valvoline Synpower Power Steering fluid along with a DRM pump to rack braided steel line.

I have roughly 350 track miles and ~20,000 miles on the current set up. I do have some noise, but not extreme. The rack is original with 98,000 miles on it.

I think others have alluded to high operating temperatures and no filter as the cause of many problems.

When you do install your new pump...I was very cautious to flush as much of the old fluid out of the system-as in run ~1 new quart of fluid thru the entire system before buttoning and filling.

Good Luck!

the blur: If you are inquiring about my recent visit...it still operates as it did...some noise when cold, but otherwise normal.

I'm not going to touch it except for new fluid when the season is over...

I should mention that my lines that were blowing were the ones over the top of the rack. Folks smarter than I, thought the lines were getting harmonics (I think there is a tech tip out there) and wrapping fuel line and ziptie them in place may have helped. No problems thus far!
