Ok, I got her on the lift to check and fill the fluid since it has leaked out some over the last couple months and for the life of me I can't see the fill plug. The shop manual says its a sqaure head bolt on the drivers side but there is a regular brass bolt that I don't think is it and the only other thing over there is a plug with a wire connector coming out of it. I'm loosin' it after staring at it for an hour... So I just tightened up the pan a touch to maybe stop the leak and felt very defeated. ???
Ok look at the clean unit. See the yellow round thing near the O/D pan? That is where the solenoid wire connector goes. Just to the left of that is the square fill plug.
My square headed fill plug has apparently been replaced by a regular 3/4" brass bolt which had a little RTV around it.
My only other question would be is it bad to be overfilled? Because: when I figured that brass thing must be the one I unscrewed it and it gushed out at me so I put it back on quickly thinking that it must not be right or why would it be spilling out... That's what makes me think it must be overfilled. Should I open it again but let the fluid out to the level of the plug or just leave it alone. It functions fine right now but I don't want to put excessive wear on it.
OH OW ....shouldn't be overfilled...you can't over fill it....check the 4-speed box and see if the gear lube is low, if it is you have gear lube migrating through the seal between them leaking gear lube into the overdrive......the leaking trans fuild is proablely an over filled overdrive leaking fuild out of the vent hole......been there done that twice
Yes, the O/D will flood out on you when you remove the plug if it has been sitting there doing nothing. When I fill mine I put about 0.75qt in and then spin the back tires by hands for a couple minutes to prime the cooling lines and cooler in the radiator. I then put the remaining ~0.95qt into the unit and get little spillage.
