1987 Rebuilt THM700R4, 2600 rpm stall converter...the company that rebuilt it put the wrong governor in it, and it shifts at 3,200 rpms!

The engine doesn't start making power until 3,100 rpms, and the majority of the power is around 5,100 rpms, so the only time I've ever actually gotten to feel my new engine is about 90 mph in 2nd gear.

I'm going to have a governor kit in hand when I pull the car out of mothballs!

Sorry but I can't help but think that is a little bit funny....although I would be major pissed if that happened to me : It makes you wonder.....how can somebody do that and actually try to pass it off to you as "right"

Any track times before/after you made your shift changes?? Also, do you have any intake mods done??

Where did you get the kit? how much? how much trial and error to get the correct shift point? I'm tired of manually shifting the SuperRam at the track.

Mine has always shifted early at WOT. Rather than juggle weights and springs for the governer, I just shift it manually, when it matters.

Do you remember the combination you used to get it at 5800? Might save me some time. Thanks

I could tell, but Id have to kill you.
It was a 3 and a 5. Your results can be a bit off depending on the motor. I have some mods.

The gov kit is easy. The truth is, you need to get the Exhaust out of the way to get the cover back on. I did it with the pipes on and that made it sort of tough.

Does it make a difference that I've got Hooker 2149's and the Hooker Y-pipe?

Not sure. I have stock pipes. Right next to the gov. If nothing else your hookers may be easier to R&R. most likely you will need to remove the Y pipe not the header.

Bone stock I think it was 4600 or so? something like that

Rossler did a very good job in making it shift WOT @ 5800 with the 383.

My local place did the trans, and could only get it to shift at 4400 where it should shift at 5800..but o well.

My 91, I really don't know all that is done. I know it has exhaust, headers, intake work, a custom chip, and frisbee removed . It may have head work and a cam (sounds like a cam)
The tranny is aftermarket stock stall converter, 4l65e planetry gears, heavy duty kevlar clutches. It shifted that high when I got it. Just had the tranny redone. I will tell it it pulls all the way to 5800 and then shifts f*cking hard. Haven't been to the track with it, but it hangs right with my buddies 99 Transam with the following mods Converter, LS6 intake, long tubes, exhuast and MTI lid. So I would say anywhere from 12.90 to 13.50.

Not sure why you are asking, but my 89 L98 with 3.07 performance axle shifted right before the rev limit cut in.....I can't remember for sure, but I am thinking about 5500.

Problem I had occasionally was that in 1st gear it would get to just before the shift point and rev limit would kick in and it would just hang there for a moment or so.

Corvette Action center told me this was a pretty common problem, there was way too small a spread between the rev limit and shift point, something like 25 rpm. In any event way too close considering various tolerances.

So on stock engine raising the shift point you will simply run into the rev limiter on engine.

I think yours shifted higher than most. My '86 with 3.07's shifts around 5000. On a stock motor that would be perfect, since any higher and you'd be out of the L98's power band. However, my SR peaks around 5800, which is why I'm changing my shift points.

Default ummmm sorry but i gotta chime in....Scorp can you help too?

I have an important question and Iam sure Scorp will also add?

A while back I remember scorp508 (Brian) setting me straight....

L-98 cars have the rev limiter set so unbelievable high (over 10,000rpms) that you will never hit it.....your air intake system chokes right about 4600 rpms....this is pretty much the rev limiter on L-98 cars.

As far as you revving out in first....I too can relate and this is why my tranny (auto) is in the shop right now....it hangs just likes yours (mine hangs at like 5100 for about 2 seconds.....which it has no right even being up there....cause there's just no power. I lose so many races cause of this. But just keep in mind its your engine revving that hard with inadaquate air (so it chokes)....your not hitting a rev limiter....

Scorp if for some reason I have misunderstood you please set me straight and my apologies to go out....if I did hear you correct then hopefully I have just passed on some good info to a fellow corvette member......knowledge is the key....
