My first Vette. Just picked it up Friday. 2.59 gears. Not the performer I thought it should be. Chalk it up to long gears. But, do you all recommend a chip as my first HP upgrade? Much difference? Or would Aircleaner, exhaust, hotter ignition be a better start?
Also, I hear alot about water on the Opti-spark. When one crashes, is there an upgrade to prevent future problems with it? I REALLY want to detail under the hood of my car, but worried about the water thing....
Long tube headers are one of the most often recommended mods. After that, I'd go for the gear swap, and probably upgrade the rear from a D36 (came stock in auto-tranny vettes) to a D44 (stock in the manual's). Just remember, the drivetrain is a SYSTEM, and not just a collection of parts. The choice of gears is tied closely to the Camshaft lobes and the piston size. Other than the basics (headers, cat-back, Air-Cleaner) you can start some very involved projects by making what seems to be 'just a small change". Of course, there is nothing Corvette-Specific about that.
Opinion, here is that chips don't do much on stock engines...
If you have modified your engine, then get a custom burned chip.
There are several forum members offering those services, just search this forum.
Thanks folks. I'm going to work on doing a long overdo plug/wires tune up. I hope that will yield more than the chip...Had tranny flushed, air filter, and a Mobil 1 oil change yesterday.
