Default Opti help!

You all may remember about two weeks ago i wrote in about SES light being on and car missing and running rich on passenger side. Well i took it to the mechanic today and he tells me it is showing a misfire code and says i need to replace my opti. He wants 480 bucks for the opti, another 150 bucks for spark plug wires, and then he is changing the waterpump, fuel filter, and all the standard stuff for a tune-up. The grand total is about 1400 bucks! AM i getting ripped? I would normally do this myself but Carlisle is right around the corner and gotta get it done. Thanks

$480 is high for an Opti. You can pick one up for $350-$400. $150 also sounds a bit high for wires. I just picked up a set from the dealer for my car for about $60. If that $150 includes plugs, then it's not too bad.

Sometimes it can be cheaper to get the parts yourself and then have someone install them.

When I had a shop do it, that price was in the ballpark for what I paid.

I'm doing all that myself, this week.

Dude, he so saw you coming.

You are running late, too. If you get the parts, you can do it in a day.

I would like to know what codes he is getting. How many miles are on the car? Was it ever flooded (under hood by water)?

Talk to us!!! The opti is blamed many times, where it might be something stupid simple.

Yeah i was wondering the same thing, if he saw me coming. Anyway, he didnt give me any code #'s, but he did say it was a mis-fire code and that the passenger side of the motor was running rich. I will make another call to him and see what code # it was. Thanks guys.

Yep. If you find out it does need to be replaced, you can get the parts and do it in a day. Wires are a PITA, but if you're that far into the front, they will not be as bad as changing with water pump and all on. I'd say you can probably buy all the parts for about $500. You might also consider a replacement for the Opti - there are several threads on the forum about that.

you have the 2nd gen opti, they are much cheaper then the 1st gen opti... street prices in the mid 200's.

you need someone to pull codes.. hell, you could have a weak O2 sensor.

I'd charge $1k, but then I'd still feel bad about ripping off another Corvette owner!

The first thing to figure out is why the passenger side is running rich. The fact that it's rich on one side only suggests it's something besides the Opti. Without stepping through the diagnostics, you may be throwing money away.

Sam Taylor opti price is $220 + shipping
Taylor Spiral Pro plug wires from Summit are $60
Waterpump...I'll guess and say $150 via Superior Chevrolet (I have an electric water pump)
Fuel Filter maybe $8

As someone else said, you can get all the parts for about $500 and do it in less than a day.

If I was in a position where I was forced to guess, I'd throw away $90 on a couple new o2 sensors based on the assumption that one of the two front o2 sensors is bad and hence causing the rich condition. The overly rich condition may be causing the misfire.

As stated by 96, one side running bad sounds like something other than an opti. Opti will usually set a low res pulse signal code when its on its way out. The dtc po300 sounds like something else. You can watch each individual cylinder with a tech 2 scan tool for misfires and graph them. It may be as simple as a couple bad plugs/wires or an o2 sensor.
