That's a good question... a lot depends on your transmission.
The automatics got the Dana 36 (D36) rear... it won't hold much.
The manuals got the Dana 44 (D44) rear... it will hold a lot more.
For reference, the D44 is also used in the Viper.

Ran my D36 for two years on slicks down to low 1.6s.
Ran my D44 for two years at very low 1.5s and now 1.4s.
Recently went to a spool for the D44, which is working GREAT. Barely noticable for street driving, and works unreal for the strip.
Not 100% necessary, but nice piece of mind knowings its in there.
