I have a '94 Vette so I'm no expert since 94+ Vettes have flashable computers (no chips).

I believe there is a setup called Romulator (piggy back computer) made for the chipped Vettes. This allows you to change the code on the fly.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will pipe in.

Craig Moates has the Auto-Prom which can be used to do real time tuning on the fly with the appropriate software. Also you can use Tuner Cats RT Tuner along with an emulator and do the same thing. Depends on what are after, both ways costs about the same when you purchase the hardware and the software. Craigs system is compact and fits within the ECM while with Tuner Cat you have an extra peice of hardware external to the ECM.

The emulator is connected to the ECM and the engine runs off the memory of the emulator. Tuning is done with RT Tuner which looks just like regular old Tuner Cat tuner software except that when you make a change its immediately uploaded to the emulator and you see the results immediately in the EM. Once a final calibration is done, you save the file and burn a chip

With Craigs system your laptop is connected to the Auto-prom device and its pretty much the same tuning aspects as with RT Tuner. Once a final calibration is determined you save your file the the Auto-Prom which contains your flash memory chip. One thing about Craigs device is that it can also double up as a stand alone ALDL datalogger as well. Pretty cool little device.

Prominator
http://misterbill.homeip.net/aboutprominator.asp
with a 91 SD tou need only a cheap adapter from Craig.
If you have one OBD1 car this is the right way to go.
You can also set more than one bin in tha flash and via rotary switch you can select the bin you like for the situation you are driving.
Example: If you have 4 different bins (one with Highway Mode enabled, One with aggraeesive timing, One with fan comes earlier, one with fan comes later..) , you can select it..
it is a 100 degF day? go to bin 3, Are you planning to go highway? select the bin 1...

i know a guy who has promiators in a 91 syclone with like 10 different bins on it. it is really nice. id really like one of those. looks like you need to send your ecu to him to install.

i really dont need anything yet to over confuse me. i just want to learn to do chip tuning at this point...
