My 84 has literally, absolutly no power what so ever. I drove it for about 1 hour one day, and coming back from my trip(about 3/4 the way to home) my 84 starts to power down. I though i was aout of gas but there was no hesitation or putting. I then thought it was the tranny, and i still think it is. BUT my dads telling me it could be my catylatic converter, being that when i pulled over my exhaust manifold was Bright Lava red/orange, and a hissing souns can be heard from my engine. so could it be my cat or my tranny. and if its my cat WHERE IS IT, i could'nt find the stupid thing.
Your cat has melted, and is choking your engine. Pretty easy to find. Just follow your pipes back. Not sure if the 84 has pre-cats or not. If so, you have 3 "cats". 1 pre per side, 1 main cats in the middle section.

'84 Vettes have one main cat. The exhaust pipes from the engine meet at a "Y" and go into the CAT behind the tranny. Then the exhaust splits (another "Y" pipe) and goes to the mufflers on each side. There is a new CAT out with dual lines in and out. I'm putting one on this week. Runs about $150.
I was going to suggest that you gut that kitten! Then I noticed that you're in Cali...so EPA dominates cali. Get ready to be set back about $150.00 plus labor to get a new one.
The single cat on an '84 has a 4 bolt flange on both ends. You can remove it and gut it relatively easily. That will clear the clog and satisfy CA's visual inspection. If it doesn't sniff clean, replacement is simple. IF it has to be replaced, make sure it isn't running rich before you bolt the new one on.

Zach, have Avery build a test pipe for you. If you need help, C4Bill and I are always willing to lend a hand. Drop me an IM and I'll pass my phone number. We're only a few miles from each other.

How can i tell if im running rich, and if i am, how would i go about fixing it.............lol....It's my first car. I'm clueless about most things on cars.
Probably a cat, but the "hissing sound from engine" opens up another can of worms. Could be a major vacuum leak and that will cause the same problem. See if you can pinpoint the hissing sound.
The hissing sound is probably just compression trapped in the exhaust being pressed through an open exhaust valve, through the rings, and out the PCV valve.
My cat just came apart on my stupid little white car, it blew the INTAKE manifold gasket, and stuck a little valve on the MAP sensor shut. I changed $30 worth of parts and gutted the cat before I found that the MAP sensor wasn't getting any input.
