Clunk...thunk...you tell me please.
1994 Corvette coupe. Lt-1 motor and auto trans. 130,000 miles with new shocks 3 months ago and is not a ragged out plastic taco wagon.
The problem is when I go over a small bump, ripple or man hole cover in the road I can hear a thunk or type of clunk from under the car. I can mostly hear it almost under the drivers seat or just behind it and to the right.
I'll be climbing under the car this weekend...what I want to know from the great guru Gods of the forum is where I should start looking and what should I check out for worn out parts.
Anyone else have this problem come up and then fixed it?
Thanks, Larry

Is it coming from your front wheel? It kinda sounds like you might have lost some alignment shims.

The rear suspension will clunk once the bushings go south.
Are you going to Road Atlanta next month?

Thanks Andy...I'll rap on the rear susp parts with a rubber mallet once I get under the car.
Right now Rd Atl is "maybe"

Check the lower control arm... and the rear tie rod bolts, too.
Keep me posted... could use a poster.

I had a clunk and it was from a worn sway bar end link bushing.
Put in poly sway bar bushing kits and eliminated the dreaded clunk.
Good Luck

I just noticed a similar sound on my 85... new to me. It's almost as if I had a thick guage skid plate under there wobbling over bumps. It's more of a clank/thud, with some metallic noise to it. I know the u-joint or worn pinion bearing thud, and it's not that deep.
It's gotta be exhaust. I'm gonna get under there as soon as I find a place to rent, and straighten everything out. Actually, I'll tear it all off and start from scratch with custom fitted mandrel 316L SS tubes.

It was badly worn dogbone bushings causing the clunk on my 85.

You can check that by trying to wobble the wheel. Side to side = bushings. Top/bottom = bearings.
If the wheel dont wobble, then its most likely the U-joints.

Its not the u-joints
The sound happens going over bumps and such...not when I hit the gas....I know a u-joint sound

A loose antenae mount will make a clunking sound when going over bumps. It will sound like it's coming from the driver's side rear wheel.

Was the same on my 84. Did all the bushings, u-joints, and rear wheel bearings while I was at it.
Even though your car is well cared for, the suspension rubber is still 11 years old. If it hasn't been replaced, it's time.
IMHO there is only one thing worse than trying to track down suspension noise.....trying to trace electrical problems.
