My car has hard brakes, and I gotta get it inspected soon. The dealer wanted to charge me around $550. I was wondering what I'd have to do to fix it myself so I could save money.

You say "hard brakes". what do you mean? What year is your car?
Generally, "hard brakes" means a very hard pedal, lot's of effort, to get the car stopped!
If that's your problem, it is likely the vacuum booster behinfdthe master cylinder. Vacuum booster assists the brake pedal travel and force required to stop the car!
If that's your problem. you should be able to fix it for less than $200 plus your time
i got an 87, and it takes alot of force to push the pedal down, it stops fine once i get it pushed down though. if it's less than $200 i'll be real happy. thanx
