Default Chip Replacement

I am about to replace my ECM on a 1992 because of a no start situation (code 41), which corrects itself when I cool the ECM. Some have suggested that it may be the MemCal (chip) and not the ECM. Any thoughts as to whether I should replace the chip as long as I am replacing the ECM? Do I need to do any programming, etc to the new chip or can I just buy it from Chevy parts and put it right in? How expensive is the chip?

If you get a prom from the dealer there is nothing to do, just install it. And unless you have the software and hardware to read and program the chip there really isn't anything to do as well. If you need a custom program there are guys like me or others that can burn you a custom chip. However if your car is pretty much stock, then there is little to be gained performance wise in a custom chip.

From a dealer a prom is probably around $75 to $100. Just a guess its been a long time since I purchased or sold a chip from a dealer.

Default Chip replacement

So, I do not need to read and program the new chip?

Replacing the chip in the ECM is quite easy. I did it in less than an hour without instruction.
I would replace ECM with the original chip first. No need to spend an extra 100 bucks on a chip if ECM was the reason for your problems.
If you think chip is problem ,have someone program it with the mods you did on your car.
