The earlier years were more problematic...they worked out the bugs as they went on in later installs...my 84 4+3 went out with 47K miles on the clock...could have been lack of driving on the first owners part...but nonetheless- it went (carrier bearing) If you keep the fluid changed with a filter at regular intervals, it should last a good time...as with most mechanical things...proper care usually benefits in the long run!
