I am getting close to droping the new motor and trans combination in my 86 vette.
I know that most people put the hooker headers in from the bottom, my question is if you can bolt the headers to the engine outside the car and then drop the engine, trans and headers into the engine bay in one assembly. Is this possible.
Also I read once that the best way to avoid leaks at the collector is to use two copper gaskers- it this true.
My recent experience was that it's best to install headers AFTER the engine is in. In hindsight, maybe drop the engine into it's mounts but leave the hoist attached in order to raise/lowerslightly when sliding the headers UP into position. THEN bolt thru the motor mounts.
You can't bolt them to the header first. You'll have too much maneuvering of the engine to do and they'll be in the way. On the right side of the car install the engine mount with the bolt pointing FORWARD. If you don't it may rub on the primary tube nearby. Mine did, oops!
I use 2 sets of percy's dead soft aluminum at the collectors and I think they're the greatest thing!
I got a little held up this weekend anyway. Miniram intake bolt angles would not line up to my trickflow heads. It looks like I am going to have to have the center ones elongated.
