OK guys I need to know the real horsepower numbers for a stock 86 with the 4+3 tranny. I need to do some calculations on top speeds so I can determine if I have to tweak the motor to reach 130 MPH in 1 mile - for the bonneville Salt Flats - 130 MPH club. I know it sounds easy - but last year 110 people tried and only 8 or 9 cars made it - (a load of motorcycles made it).
Keep in mind that you are loosing 10% to wheel spin on the salt - so essentially we need to get to 145 MPH in 1 mile!
We made it pretty easily in an 82 with a 350 HP motor - qualified 7 different people in that car. Now the C-3 has stepped up to the 150 MPH club - and the C-4 will be doing the 130 MPH grunt work. We don't want to disappoint perople, so we need to be sure that this car will make it comfortably - if not we need to tweak it - right away.
The factory crank numbers are pretty close, 230HP, but the torque number can really vary, mine ended up with about 350-355tq at the crank with minimal modding.
About 190rwhp and 290rwtq for a bone stock 86, give or take.
haha, I know how you can trap 130 in the 1/4 mile
But seriously, is it a rolling start, or a standing start? If it's a standing start, then you prolly don't want too torquey of a motor, because you'll be giving a lot up to wheelspin. Since you're a manual tranny also, I'd recommend a MiniRam, along with a cam somewhere in the neighborhood of 222/230 (Crane makes one) along with a set of those Vortec Fast Burn heads. That oughta be a good setup for a 130mph in a standing mile.
It's a standing start - but since it's 1 mile, wheel spin off the line is really not an issue. Changing gears is where you have to be carefull of wheel spin. I know it seems like a trivial task. Essentially we are building these cars foir the Silver State and Ensinada road races - but this is just a fun stepping stone.
