Well, I'm having trouble with my start up as previously when the problem was the fuel pump. I replaced the fuel pump regulator at Carlisle after suggestion from Gordon Kilibrew, no success, on the way home after a couple hours drive, when I tried to pass a car it just coughed and slowed down. About 80 miles from home dead stop! Had to have it trucked a local shop, new fuel pump. The last one had been put in last Sept. Still under warranty but that didn't help me 80 miles from home! Now I'm having same symptoms, hard starting etc. I put a fuel pressure gauge on it and went for a drive. Turned on the key, pressure jumped (it also started right up!) then when I started to drive, okay until I step on the gas, the fuel pressure gradually drops, if I step on it hard, then the pressure drops to 0 and of cours the engines sputters! Let off on the gas and the pressure goes back up??? I have a Holley AFPR, it's only 2 years old, can't imagine that's the problem. What should I be looking at? I had hoped to drive to Virginia the end of the month but I'm afraid I'll have to shlep down in the Caravan if I can't depend on my car! I have an 85 with 73K miles. What do I do?@! I'm really getting frustrated! I don't have that many tows left on my AAA card!

If that filter is clogged the pump is working harder and harder. Blow into a tube with no opening on the other end and keep trying to blow. Soon enough you'll pass out , same thing happens to your pump. Lame analogy but you can see my point.
Like everybody else, replace the filter. Then start looking for more problems. Was the sock on the pump intake changed, each time? It would pay to pull the pump and check the sock, anyhow, because you may have crap in the tank, re clogging the sock. Check the full length of the fuel lines for sharp bends or kinks. Hoses too. It isn't common, but if part of the inner wall of a hose has started to separate, it could cause a blockage. I would use a high pressure air hose on each individual section of line to be sure it's clear. Over working the pump with a blockage, like a clogged filter AND running the tank low on fuel, shortens pump life.
