Default idle stabilizing questions..a question for those who are running cams

hi all

i installed a XR 258 HR cam in my 90 6speed, performance is good, runs fine..

my problem is, that i get sometimes click noises from the exhaust..

i solved this, trying around with timing, backflushed my stock injectors, and noise was solved, so far...just a bit tstststs..the cammed exhaust sound...

i swapped the stock inj to the pink ford ones, maybe you ´ve red my thread about lean blms, aso, but i finally solved this, too

as outside temp changes, the sound under the car changes, too...just a miracle

what i want to know...how much base timing, total timing, BLM´s are you running in your cammed engines??

ive played around, but sometimes, it works, sometimes not..im a bit lost and im fed up with playing around with timing and rich -lean conditions at idle...i hope you can and will help me!!

otherwise, the car runs very very good...BLM´s near 128 all over the board, PE mode A/F is about 12-13 : 1, just a few knocks here and there..also it idles fine, but the sometimes occuring click-click sound....

ok....thanks in advance!!

Exhaust leaks usually go tick tick tick....... Sound will often change with temperature. If it's colder outside it will take longer for the exhaust to heat up and expand the area around the leak, affecting the noise.

hi...

im sure, i dont have a exhaust leak..ive fighted this noise since i own the car, even my decision to rebuild the engine was based to get rid of this noise...

i found out, it depends on the idle fueling(how rich-lean the mixture is at idle) and idle timing...

what timing are you all with hotter cams running??

thanks

Just a UWAG here....
If you still have the CATS on it could it be the catalyst coming apart and making a rattle sound that you are hearing?

dont have catalysts......not a single one...

how much timing are you cammed guys running?

i have set it to 6 °BTDC , EST wire disconn, timing in the chip is approx 24°, stock 20° BLM is about 124..

I run a 219 on a stock tune, same base timing. The only ticking I get is from the injectors. Just to clarify, you're saying the ticking noise varies with A/F ratio, timing, and outside temp?

Wierd stuff

@ Upstate..yes, trust me, ive fighting this noise since i have the car, and that are almost 4 years....
the noise was a real loud click click, and it sounded real bad..just like something is broken...after talking to a friend, whos working on such cars for 30 years, reading the forum, and playing around, i pulled out my stock inj, backflushed them, and reversed them, left side to right, and vice versa. also added a bit timing...and surprise..clicking was gone...just a bit a cammed sound from underneath...

to make erverything sure, i bought five-o-motorsport inj, the pink ones, with said 22lbs/hr....they caused a lean condition, which i corrected via the chip...im running a inj const of 20.6lbs...

the BLMs at idle depend on outside temp and engine temp, and so the click does..i know, its strange, but im searching for a point to start...

many thanks

Are you asking how much initial timing, timing at closed loop idle, closed loop cruise, or the entire timing map?

I can post what I have, but I can't scan the entire map.
