looking for more power from my daily driver (92 lt1). I love the responsiveness of the stock engine and wondered if this would be affected by cam change. I have auto trans with 3.07 gears. heads are lightly ported. have 1.6rr with lt4 springs, 52mm, factory exhaust.i will be changing tc soon to 2200-2400? i have been reading member input from the forum and have been considering maybe the zz9 or hotcam? any experience with both? is ecm programming as easy as ordering a new chip based on my cars specs? any other suggestions i should consider? thank you for your input.
zz9 usually works better for the autos since you spend more time in the middle rpm's
I agree.
I have a '92 A4 with a Dana 44 3.07, AFR 190 heads, and a Crane cam (if I remember correctly, it is a 210/224) that is very close to the zz9.
Since my A4 shifts at about 5500, I think it is the best cam for application. The HotCam is a good cam, but is designed to be used in a slightly higher rpm range. I am particularly satisfied with the low-end torque -- my A4 has a shift kit, and I frequently break the tires loose on the 1-to-2 shift at low rpms when I'm not trying. My driveability is excellent all the way through the band -- my description is "smooth power."
My goal was an "extremely" driveable street machine -- and that is what I got.
The cam is hardly noticable at my 800 rpm idle and vacuum at idle is about 15". I did notice a small decrease in power brake boost at low rpm, but I have since gone to C5 front brakes with larger pistons. So, I am satisfied with this too.
