Get a quality set like those from Exotic Muscle or TPIS. Avoid Hooker unless you like frustration.

No longtubes are "fun" to put on.

You will need gaskets. I recommend Percy's deadsoft aluminum for the header gaskets, and Mr. Gasket copper collector gaskets.

Somewhere around $800 for the headers any Y pipe from TPIS. Shipping to Europe is going to add to that.

Unfortunately I have not installed a set myself, but the people that I know that have installed Hookers have had very few problems

I have a 96 lt1 but i'm installing the headers ment for l98.
I have full length hedman headers
you can get those from summit for like 150
then www.procryo.com they are a local shop and they ceramic coated my headers for 150
jet hot wants 250 plus ship....
shorty are not worth it!!!!
but hedman only comes with 1 and 5/8 not 1 and 3/4 primary tubing.
Great price. I have ARP double plated copper gaskets and arp bolts.
you will have to get an 02 bung in the header b4 its ceramic coated!
You also dont have holes for the EGR system...which I removed(the rear of my intake needed a plate on it which i got from tpis.com) and then you throw code 32 which you can ignore or edit out....Im going to get lt1 edit.
Or ski_dwn_it can burn a chip to do that for you since you are l98.

No matter what full length headers take a good 7 hrs with the right tools.
I'd say its a weekends work and its best to have a friend.

also I cut my pipes and had a local shop weld them in!!!!

Anymore q's feel free to ask.

good luck

You are going to have problems putting L98 headers on a LT1. Even thought the ports are the same and the headers fit, the spark plug angles are different and going to be almost impossible to get plugs in. The LT1 headers are nicer anyways and don't hang as far down as the L98 headers do.

Ok I found out that the headers I got are the L98 headers.
Thanks to that jackass! oh well. I got them ceramic coated.
And I need to put 02 bungs in each one. Will they fit on my 1996 auto lt1?
Are the O2 sensors to the front and back of the stock collectors the front and rear 02 sensors?
And the rear ones can be edited out or use 02 stims on?
thanks

I am wanting to run longtubes, most probably going with TPIS, my problem is occurring with trying to locate a X-pipe and back portions of the exhaust system, what would you guys recommend? I am not putting the converters back on the car since we do not have emission tests here in LA, how would I go about getting the computer to not throw codes?

Thanks,
Daniel

I installed my Hooker headers, very simple and easy if you have a lift. Very satisfied.

Just got finished with my Hooker long tube install. The drivers side went ok but the passenger side was a pain. The #8 header bolt was really tough. Also some trimming of a few heat shields and some grinding to the K member was in order. I used Fel Pro header gaskets with a bead of hi temp red permatex on both sides and stage#8 locking header bolts. As far as Hooker's Y Pipe scrap it!!!!!!!! I'm going to take mine off and go with 2.5 pipes coming off the headers into a X Pipe then duals all the way back to the mufflers. I haven't decided which mufflers to buy yet. BUT GOOD LUCK WHICH EVER ONES YOU DECIDE TO GO WITH

Ok, I am not sure why everyone is always blasting the Hooker Headers for the L98. My install went as smooth as could be. The total job took 12 hours from when I loosened the first bolt to when I started the car after the install.

Most of time was spent on REMOVING items needed to help with the install. I removed the 2 cross braces under the car, remove the alternator, remove the starter, remove the AC compressor, remove a couple of the heat shields, remove 1 Tranny bolt (it was holding some wiring harness), remove all the spark plugs, and remove the passenger side motor mount bolt (flip this around on install).

Once this was done, Both headers slipped into place in 5 minutes. I had the car up on jackstands about 2 feet. What more could you ask for ? All bolts holes lined up perfectly. I then started a couple of the bolts to just hold the headers in place and check the fit.

The next few hours were spent on putting all the items I removed back where they belong. The passenger side header bolts are a little tough to work on , but ½ hour later , they are all in. You need the correct tools to help get the job done.

The last 2 hours were spent on the Y pipe and Catback exhaust.

Hope this helps.

Vic

i have the Hooker longtubes. they were $640 for the set (ceramic finish). I had the shop install them. The shop took 6 hours to do it, at a cost of $492 to me. The car is still in the shop having some other work done, so I haven't actually seen them im my car yet!

I'm glad you had a good experience. I did not, so that is what I'm reporting. My bolt holes did not line up, and it took me over 2 months to finally get the collectors to stop leaking. But that was the fault of the junk Y-pipe, not the headers themselves. Like I said earlier in this thread it's a 50/50 shot. While many like yourself had no problems with the install, many others did have problems. I just think anyone getting ready to make this purchase should hear both sides. And then they should consider the fact that you rarely hear complaints about fitment of the other manufacturers.
