Default Check List for a 85...

I have a 85.. Before making this post.. I did read the FAQ.. all of it.. I am still a little fuzzy.. Funny thing is I am a computer consaltant and I dont understand a thing you guys are talking about.. But I will learn..

I know I need a burner...
I was going to get the one from moates.net for $85.00
http://www.moates.net/product_info.p...products_id=48

Then I need a scanner tool..
CABL1 OBD1-Style ALDL Connector $30.00 Connector with the
ALDU1 USB-to-ALDL Converter for $50.00..

so now that covers the ALDL scanner tool and the burner..

Where I am confused is this eraseing thing..
Do I have to buy a eraser or can I upgrade my chip.. to a new chip
do I have to buy a convertor to do this upgrade.. What is the best way to do this.. Since I have a 85 I guess that means I have the 1226870 chip..

Any info would be great.. thanks guys

The Moates burner- Burn1- wont program your stock chip, which is a 2732. The 1226870 number you gave is the part number of your ECM. I dont know if you can upgrade to a newer style chip in a 6870 ECM, but the moates Burn1 will only accomodate flash chips. It will READ other chips, just not program them. As for the cable, build your own. Go to the WinALDL site for a simple single transistor cable schematic (cost <$5 to build) or search for the two transistor or max 232 schematic online. The single will work fine on an 85- I used it myself, with the WinALDL software- which is free. There have been a few posts of Vette owners not being able to link with the Tunerpro scan tool via a moates cable. Maybe they were flukes- I dont know. There is something in the datamaster scan manual about scanning Vettes- you can read it at ttspowersystems.com, maybe that applies to the tunerpro software as well. The erase thing only applies to non-flash chips, like your stock chip. *newer* chips electronically erase. Your stock chips and their direct replacements need a UV eraser.

The hard part for you fill be finding a bin editor and an ECU file. ONLY Tunercat has it (at least thats all I could find), and its like $75 plus the $20 ECU file. I hear the software and support is great though.

I changed the ECM on my 85, upgraded to the 1227165 used from 86-89 in Camaros, Firebirds,TranAms, and Vettes, as well as a few others I believe. You will need the Memcal, which is dubbed the "chip" in these ECM's, but is really a small assembly of chips. It has a 27C128 eprom in it, that you can replace/reprogram, or get a moates adapter to add a newer chip and bypass the stock chip. I bought a used ECM on EBAY for $30- with the memcal, and swapped in about an hour. There are some wiring changes, and some needed relays, but its not hard. You will be much better off in my opinion swapping ECM's, then getting stuff to burn proms to match the new ECM.

I hope this helped.
