My buddy has a 91 and was wanting to know if a shift kit would help him with that lag between gears on the strip. He ran a 8.94 (1/8) and when i drove it it seems to go way past its peak (shifts at 5000- redline). Pros and cons.
A shift kit will make the duration of the shifts shorter, but it won't have much affect on when the shift comes. If the shifts are late (over winding the engine), you need a govenor kit to adjust the shift points.
A shift kit (TransGo is great) will make the shifts quick and crisp.
To change the WOT shift points a governor recalibratino kit (B&M makes one) will get the job done.
The WOT shift points should be past the HP peak (maximize area under the power curve), but not too far beyond. If 5k RPM is too high, his L98 must be bone stock.
