I would like to put 89 stock rims (17") on my 86 (16"). This would be a direct swap, correct or is there some measurement to be considered? That is, will they bolt right up and roll down the road? Thanks.
They will bolt on but there is about a 3/4" different in offset. The 84-87 wheels had a 38mm offset and the 88 and later wheels were 56mm. The later wheels will be further inside the wheelwells by the 18mm difference and will be definitely noticable.
There should be sufficient clearance in the wheelwells for the later wheel/tire package to turn but you could see some interference on a full-lock turn.
you can get adapters to place the later wheels further out in the wheelwell. The adapter bolts to the bearing hub and the wheel bolts to the adapter. Figure on $200-300 for a set of 4. The various accessory catalogs like Mid-America or Eckler's have them. Vette Brakes also has them.
