Well, I have replaced the intake gasket, valve cover gaskets and I still have a leak. I don't want to pull the motor for the rear main seal. I just had the tranny out and the shop didn't replace it...(bastards!). How much of a leak is to much? Becasue if I pull the motor a new one is going in.
Is the oil dripping out of the flywheel inspection cover? If not it's not the rear main seal. If it's running down the side of the rear of your block it may be the oil pressure sender. Find out for sure where it's coming from before wasting any more money. As far as your question of how much is too much, that's entirely up to you. One drop is too much for me.
True one drop is too much, however on an auto it dosen't hurt to much a six speed it would eventually destory the clutch. The rear main is where it is coming from dry everywhere but the weep hole. It leaves about a dime to quater size spot over a two day period. I just did the valve covers and intake gaskets this weekend. What really gets me is sometimes it will be dry for days and then leak a bit and then be dry.
I do all my own work unless it is rebuilding a tranny or a rearend. I would be easier to pull my motor than my tranny in my garage.
Well I had my rear main seal replaced when the A4 was out for a rebuild becuase I had an elusive oil leak at the time. My leak was at the rear of the intake base and so severe that heavy driving would run through a quart of oil in 300miles.
If you occasionally get a drop or two I wouldn't mess with it. When you do decide to do it, just pull the A4 back and slip in a new $20 rear main seal.
