What would be a good initial base timing setting for an 85 TPI 350 w/ vortec heads, 9.8:1 CR, 224*/230* .510"/.512" cam, headers, and high flow runners. I have heard that base timing is related to cam duration and obviously CR. What is the stock base timing for an 85.
I think the base timing on all L83s and L98s is 6*. Your best bet is to expeiment. Make a series of 1/4 mile passes, and keep advancing it until your mph quits improving.
I believe 6deg BTDC is stock base; give it what it wants without ping.
CR and duration are factors but it's realy effective CR which depends on static CR and overlap (duration & LSA).
When you say give it what it wants without ping, what so you mean? Give it timing until it pings then back it off, what about the advance curve? I don't have any diagnostic software to watch the computer, so should I drive it without the knock sensor to hear if the thing knocks?
That's the beauty if the 1/4 mile merhod. When it knocks, whether you hear it or not, the ESC will pull timing to "save" the engine, and THAT will slow your 1/4 mile mph down. Back it off 2* and your good to go.
