Default ZF:How much power?

I'm a little leary of pushing my '92 to hard. After reading that the ZF is limited to 450ft/lbs. What kind of number are you guys pushing through a ZF with success & durability?

Ask the ZR1 guys...the 415 strokers are laying down 500+rwhp with no problem.

I ran 9.90's with mine leaving at 5500 on a clutch dump. It was behind a juiced 396" small block that made in excess of 800 lb/ft of torque on the button. The ZF is a brutally strong transmission (many consider it to be the strongest manual ever put in a production vehicle); you have nothing to worry about until you're well over 700 lb/ft of torque.

The
ZF is very strong just dont miss to many shifts. you have to remember that when these trannys are rated there is a safety factor built in (usually 25 to 30%) . ZF's are so strong that Ford chose to put them behind their F-250/350/450 and 550 trucks. I cant rember who races it but there is a 8 second ZR-1 that uses a ZF trans.

They are very expensive to fix. The weak link is the hydraulic clutch setup If you go to the ZF Doc's website you will see a slave cylinder that was cut open to show a large rust pocket. The other problem is that second gear is interferance fit to the shaft, ZF docs weld it on. They also Cryo the parts.

Thanks for all the input guys. Yeah my car is a fairly stout 383ci w/N20. Last year on the LT4 hot cam and a 100 shot it put down 475hp/620ftlbs.

You can see how starving the car is for air. Us high altitude guys are at such a disadvantage.
Next time I'll go to the dyno it will have these parts in addition;

Comp Cams Custom Grind .565/.575 234/242 114 LSA
Comp Cams 941 Valvesprings
Titanium Spring Retainers
Comp Cams "R" lifters
Canton 6qt Oil Pan
Canton Oil Pickup
Mallory Hyfire VI (685)
Keyed Hub
Lots of head/Intake manifold porting
Long Tubes 1 7/8" (rather than the edelbrock shorties)
X-pipe (rather than the stock resonator)
150 shot of N20 (rather than a 100 shot)
You can check out the whole setup here

Hoping for 550+whp on the spray. I'm afraid that I'll also be pushing 700ft/lbs (160% of the GM stated limit). I really can't afford to spent 2+K if the tranny goes. I'm going to have to look into the ZF docs.

I have been running 10.70's with low 1.5/60's and never had any problems with the stock ZF. This year I have broke 3 halfshafts and a Dana 44 case though
