Default oil temp going nuts...

tonight as i drove home i was flipping the switches for the dash info and i noticed that my oil temp was reading LO after driving for well over 30 minutes. after sitting for a while it would bounce up (by 10*-15* increments), but as soon as i started moving again it would bounce back down to LO. I do have the Z51 package with the oil cooler, and i do have a 185* t-stat, but my coolant temp was around the 195* mark when all this was happening...all the fluid levels are ok...

is this just another sensor going bad? any other possibilities?? TIA

Could be your gauges or sensors. I have an '87 with Z51 package, large cap. oil cooler (due to the turbos) and my (coolent) temps normally run between 175 to 200 depending on weather conditions; my oil normally runs between 150 to 195.

Sounds like you have either a bad connection to the sensor, a bad sensor, or bad ground.

I would crawl under the car and check the way your attached to the sensor, then if that doesn't work after cleaning and resecuring, then a change of the sensor is in order.

I had a similar problem, but mine read "LO" all the time even when coolant temps were over 200*.
Replaced the oil temp sensor, problem was solved.
