I posted this on the General Message board and got little help. I hope posting here brings me better luck.
86 L98 w/ 4+3 trans. Slips terribly in reverse. Cannot get up slight incline in reverse. I can roll/pop start it in reverse. Does not seem to slip in forward gears. O/D seems to work properly. Goes in when I hit the switch, comes out when I floor it, goes back in when I back off, and turns off when I stop. I am completely boggled.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea whether its the clutch, tranny, or the O/D unit.
I dropped it off at my reliable handy dandy Chevy dealer with a top notch Vette mechanic to figure this out. I will post next week when I get back to let you know what the problem was/is in case anyone else has this issue. Driving me nuts

its the OD unit, the direct clutchs in the unit are worn and probably the front annular bearing. The reson you can go forward is because the trans is driving through the direct clutch sprag (one way clutch). Frank
Thanks for the info, Frank. I am actually leaning in that direction myself but the mechanic at the Chevy dealer swears its the clutch. So, to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside I am going to replace the stock clutch with a Zoom Clutch kit and probably replace or rebuild OD unit.
Or do any of you think that this might do the trick? I would much rather spend $145 than $1650.00 http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...3P2TMBKF1C83C9
How difficult is this to install? Any tips?
Any help on where to get new/rebuilt OD for the 4+3 would be appreciated

Reason: addition
Hi. I have an 85 4+3. Had a slight nois in the transmission. Then suddenly one day It slipped in reverse. It was equivalent to when the ckutch slipped, but only in reverse.
I am sorry to say it but for me it was the overdrive unit and a bearing that turned around. I hjad also a leakage of the gearbox oil trough to the overdrive unit. The bearing had worn out some fixtures in the wall where the bearing was located. That part was difficult to get. I am living in Norway so that might be the reason. I bought a new OD of the latest issues which had strengthened that part so it should not hapen again. This was a modification done by Dough Nash. It was very expensive. I have had it fr seven years now and nothing has happened with since.
Hope you can get spares or a spare unit. The originals from 84,85 and to ...? is weak.
