a miniscule amount of practically nothing on the first oil change after engine rebuild/modification, 3 changes so far: 300, 600 and 1000 miles. I saw almost zero on the last two changes. perhaps there will be a bit more now that I'm in the 3000 mile interval period.

Unless you have a very abused engine, you should not see much more than dust.
The filter actually catches it all. Cut apart your old filter and inspect that if you want to really have a handle on what your engine is doing.
The magnets are a nice aftermarket "peace of mind" item.
If you have tons of material showing up on the magnets, then your filter appreciates the assistance..
not going to hurt anything by having the magnetic plug and the magnet on the pan at all.

Same here. Oill changes at 150, 1,200 and 3,500 after rebuild w/ nothing but the lightest smattering of dust. For a few bucks, the magnetic oil plug can be just one more way to detect a problem before a castastrophic event occurs. No guarantee but one more possible harbinger.

Using mag plug logic from the avaition industry; there will be an accumulation of "fuzz" from normal wear and tear. Some mfgrs use the rate of fuzz growth by measuring the diameter and charting growth rate.
I "read" my mag plug to guage and collect particles indicating a substantial problem. During each oil change I note the amount of fuzz and wipe the plug clean. Should the plug pickup bits or chunks, I know that its time to inspect.
So, fuzz is normal, chunks are bad..... -JRC-
I bought the little combo package from MAD with the drain plug and filter magnet. So far no fuzz on drain plug with 2 oil changes. Maybe it's all held in the filter if there is any, as it's a larger more powerful magnet. Im hopeing there just isn't any.
A small amount of magnetic sludge covering the magnet, nothing big when I was running my original short block. When I put in the new bearings and piston I had some "break in" flakes, but nothing out of the ordinary. I'm back to just the little bit of sludge now.
It sounds better than they are. If you change oil as often as most of us and use Mobil 1 you probably don't have any metal shavings in your oil. Between synthetic oil and a good filter, you don't need it.

I run Mobil 1 SuperSyn and the M1-202 filter (well.... right up until it was canned, now I use K&N) and I still had particles.
