single pipe vs y pipe?
Would it be better to have a single pipe coming out the back instead of a y pipe, so that the air does not have to bend to go out? and then the pipe could exit out the back under the license plate?

well you would have to have a very large pipe!
say a 5 inch diameter pipe.... or else it would acctually restrict air flow.
well what you are trying to do is eliminate back pressure.
are you trying to get rid of you mufllers?
what year is your car and what exhaust mods do you already have?
i think the bend is a negligable amount of back pressure say less than .7 psi
things to ponder:
why dont you just buy muffler elims they are strait pipes from the cat back(no mufflers) they reduce weight abotu 20 lbs and are better than any cat back system. and only $170. search ebay. i bought mine from ladyvettr.
also 1 pipe in the middle will look bad.
its "illegal" not to have mufflers but if they dont see it it wont matter.. with a single pipe that u cna see through ure mor likely to be pulled over.

I remember talking about the restrictions in airflow in early C4 exhausts ( 2.25" Y into 3" Single into 2.25" Y ) And it was agreed at the time that due to some fluid dynamics stuff (over my head) that the 3" pipe was not suffocating vs. the 2.25" Y already ahead of it.
Also, I believe if you could tune your exhaust you would want it to drop in diameter further along the way so exhaust velocity maintains artificially constant even though its temperature and true velocity is decreasing.
L98 cars had, for all intents, a single exhaust. The pipe from each manifold met at a "Y" and entered the main catalytic converter and exited into a single pipe. Just before the differential, that pipe attached to a "Y" pipe where each half had its own muffler.
Low restriction mufflers, or eliminators does help to reduce backpressure but eliminating the back pressure can reduce low-end power. A true dual exhaust system where a exhaust pipe and muffler handled each cylinder head was typical on pre-smog cars and power gains were made over a single exhaust pipe.
Most cat-back systems do provide small incerases in HP and torque over the factory system due to reduction of backpressure and smoothing out of restrictive bends found in factory pipes.
How hard would it be to just go ahead and run two pipes out underneath the car so you would have true dual exhaust? That way you could put an x-pipe on it. I have always wanted to do that to my 91 and just wondered how hard it would be.
That would sure be awesome, but without cats and mufflers, it would be way too loud for the boss lady. It seems like it would probably be cheaper to find a good muffler shop that could make the pipes for you and then put some hi-flow cats and good mufflers on it. I believe it is Dr. Gas that sells pre-made X-pipes, so you could buy them too. Thanks for that link on those pipes.

I wonder how much I would gain with the muffler elims too...does it eliminate the precats?
I wonder how hard it would be to take off come inspection time....

Unless they've changed it, it's only 2 1/4" pipe. You'd want 2 1/2" pipe. For a "true-dual" setup you'd need to try a muffler shop, and a X or H pipe would be a real good idea; more power, better sound.
And.... two pipes flow better than one, and what about the spare, as was mentioned.
I don't think you would get a gain and it would look terrible. Try to get muffler eleminators. They still use the cats (for the law) have a great sound. Save weight. Much cheaper.
