Default Fuel Guage stuck

I've got 'sys' flashing on my instrument panel. I haven't checked the codes but it looks like the fuel guage is stuck. Has anybody tried to monkey with one that's on the blink? The manual says drain the fuel tank before removal. Is that necessary? The dealer wants $476 for a new one.

Help please.

if it is the fuel level sender, its attached to the fuel pump bracket. If this is the part thats stuck, it does not require you dropping/draining the fuel tank. You can pull it out through the fuel filler door. Will take about half an hour of your time.... I'm not exactly sure which piece is faulty, someone else may chime in with more details about what the cause is... in any case though, it is never necessary to drop/drain the fuel tank.

Read my article in the tech section regarding repair of your sending unit.

You didn't happen to get that Shell gasoline a while back that had the high sulfur content, did you?
That Shell gas caused quite a few fuel sending units to lock up.
If you did, Shell is supposed to pay for the repairs.

Ditto with Speedway/SuperAmerica gas distributed by Ashland Petroleum. Unfortunately, the statute of limitations has expired for consumers wanting to file damage claims with them...
