To quote homer, Sweet Merciful Crap! After months of hunting down my idling problems, and replacing things piece by piece (everything helped alittle). I ended up with a consistent idle surge from 600-900 RPMs when the car was warmed up. It was suggested that the IAC should be cleaned or replaced. Once I got it off and saw what it looked like I decided to replace it. Bought a new one, set the proper pintel length, reset it according to the manual, then I just listened to my baby purr... idle stays almost dead on 600 RPMs...
next week I'm gonna replace the starter, and clean up some other items... then, FINALLY, let the modding begin
Awesome... Makes me think about changing mine for good measure. What's the part cost, and how did you go about setting the pintel length? I have the service manual, but looking at it yesterday, I thought it was a little vague on that particular process. Thanks...

Picked a new one up from Autozone for $27.99, came with a new gasket. The instructions said only that the pintel length must be less then 28MM, for my application. The pintel was set at 24 out of the box, if I would have adjusted it, the pintel just screws in or out slightly. The hardest part was getting the old IAC out, it was siezed up pretty bad.

How did you get it for such a great price? It's listed at $49.99 on the Autozone website. I'm ready to change the IAC for about the 3rd time, but I might try one from Napa this time.
That's the IAC i got... you can see its' 27.99. and it's a wells model not ACDelco. The ACDelco one was 29.99, but the autozone I went to did not have the delco in stock, only the wells one. I wanted to finish the project, so I got the wells.

Yeah, I've got a 90...different part. Luckily I did some surfing on the net and found the AC Delco part for $52 with free shipping. Normally $103. Hopefully this will one will last.

Amazing! Are you trouble shooting those things? My car has two IACs, and they are both the factory originals. I know they can go bad, but if you're installing a 4th IAC in a '90 something has to be taking them out, if they are all really bad.

RACE ON!!!
The original one lasted 10 years. The second was replaced by the dealer and the next two after that was autozone (Wells). In researching the forum, it's possible that the ecm is bad, causing the iac to not function properly. In my situation, I think it's really the IAC because once it's changed out the idle problems go away immediately. Unfortunately, just not permanently.
WOW! Is the pintle being positioned properly, during installation? If the ECM were bad, wouldn't the replacement of the IAC fail to fix the problem, even temporally?
