Default Trying to establish a good starting point

My intent is to replace the EPROM with a type that will permit flash transfers rather than UV erasing and reburning. I've read that those using the 27C256 Eprom can opt for the AT29C256 Flash Eprom to eliminate the need for an eraser.

------After rereading the sticky notes I have determined that my 86 has the -165 ECM.
Years covered – ECM Part Number
1986-1989 - 1227165
------'Cept the ECM was replaced at some point and by the sticker is now a 16198259.
"Some of the popular ECM's have also been replaced with newer P/N's. 1227165 -> 16198259
These are known to be updated designs and usually considered desireable replacements."
-------The attached pic is the current ECM as described above.

So which type of EPROM do I have? Any suggestions? Thanks -JRC-

35 hits and no one knows the answer? Can someone offer a question that may spawn some though provoking conversation? Maybe like "is the babe section ever coming back?"

The new ECM that replaced the original 12277165 ECM is still either a $32 or $32B or a $6E hardware mask. Having said that that new ECM will take the original 27C128 eprom with a 32k memory. You can replace that 27C128 eprom with a flash programmable AT29C256 or a SST 27SF256 chip. Either chip will work fine in the ECM provided that you "stack" the bin file when you load it with your prom programmer. At Craig Moates website a bin stacker utility is available there. Or you can just load the bin file in a starting location 4000 if in remember right. I usually just stack the file meaning that the compliler utility doubles the bin file and I load it as a 32k file rather than a 16k file.

After reading the FAQ's at the Moates and Prominator websites, it is clear that this ECM (P4) has the 27C128 EPROM. Replacement with either the Moates or Prominator setups is the next step towards tuning nirvana.

It doesn't seem cost effective to work with the original eprom. Lots of extra equipment and time just to switch bin files? So I'm leaning towards the flash proms that both of these guys are selling. The kit at Moates is about $325 includes a license for Tunercat, but still requires a few additional pieces that will add up to around $400. I don't get it, why not put the WHOLE package together? The Prominator has a nice package as well that permits easy flashing without removing the ECM. From simply reading each websites product info, it appears that the Prominator product has some benefits above the Moates.

Before jumping into this project, what experiences can ya'll offer? Good, bad, whatever?
