While removing the EGR pipe the wire connected to the top of the sensor broke off. The stem that threads into the sensor appears to have a crimp connector on top which receives the wire. Do I have to buy a new sensor or can I just buy the stem that threads into the sensor? What is the down side of opening the crimp on the old stem and crimping it over the wire? Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I would say open it up and recrimp, the sensor should be ok.

That is one cheap and problematic switch.
I would replace it. I had to replace mine twice to get a good one.

Th switch only costs about $10. I would replace it. The hardest part is geting to the connector behind the distributor when you replace it.

I had to replace my egr temp switch because it was broken right at the top of the switch. I cut the old wire and spliced in the wire from the new switch. works great, no more code 32 on my 87. hope this helps.
