Ok, I'm no genius when it comes to car electronics but I have a question. Ok, I have a '93. I know these can't be reprogramed or "upgraded". So, why can't you just switch out this ecm for a newer one, say a 96? This way they can be reprogramd with a power programer or something. This maybe a stupid question, but I don't know the answer.
Every year is slightly different. The harness changes w/ options and upgrades. Yes, it can be done, but you are talking about a fair amount of work and expense.
One of the biggest changes with the ECM was in the 96 Model year. GM went to the Onboard Diagnosis II. This system uses over one hundred different inputs for the ECM. Such little things as the fan not turning on when it is suppose to will triger the check engine light. The older ECM's did not have this much monitoring capability. It would probably turn into quite the project. Good Luck!
Tunercat has software to burn a new chip for your car. Any of the chip tuners can make you a chip if you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself. The upgrade is not that hard, but also not worth it.
LT1 edit will not work on your car. This will only work on '94 and later LT1 motor cars.
Good Luck,
Check http://www.tunercat.com and http://www.lt1edit.com (not sure on that one - do a search if it doesn't work). Without motor work, the most you'd want to change on a stocker is fan turn on temps, shift points and firmness, and gear ratio if you changed it. With motor mods, then you have to start playing with fuel and timing. Check your email.
