A friend of mine has access to a 90 700R4 low mile built strip trans, don't think it came from a Vette. Is it simple to just change tailshaft, or is it much more involved to interchange?
The tail shaft housing that is. Then you might need to change the speedo sender. Some use the magnetic hall effect type sender and some use the gear driven sender.
I am pretty sure that the vette uses its own output shaft. I remember looking at the different length output shafts in my trans part book. The 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive trucks eack have there own shaft. The third is corvette and the 4 th is the others. Don't know that it won't work but I an 99% sure that they are somewhat different. If I remember I will check the book later.
I have a TCI rebuilt trans. out of a 90 Camaro in my 89 Vette.
I installed the Vette's output shaft which was .5 inch shorter than the Camaro's and used my original tail shaft.
I probably could have used the Camaro's output shaft because the only difference i could see was the extra length in the splined area for the driveshaft.

It should fit fine, you have to:
Swap the vette tailhousing and speedometer sensor from your vette.
Swap your speed gear onto the tailshaft in the right set of index holes.
Vette tailshaft is about an inch shorter, but you can just cut off the existing tailshaft with a grinder or cutoff wheel.
No need for taking it appart.
You should pull the pan and make sure the converter and pressure switch wireing harnesses match up. If not you can usually swap the harness's between the two.
Also watch the bellhousing ears, some are different and may need to be trimmed off for exhaust or header clearance.
