Well...I got in to my 89 last night and after closing the door and before starting the car I could hear an electrical arcing sound from the dash around where the ECM is.
It started ok and runs ok....but this is the second time I have heard it. Does anyone know what it is and how to fix it?
I'm not aware of a common problem causing this. It definetly sounds like a short. If you cant find it by just looking and listening I would pull into a garage and remove kick panel and turn off the lights and have someone start it briefly and see if you get a light show in the dark. If it is a wire arcing it could lead to a fire or other serious problems. Good luck.
The key wasnt in the ignition...my thought was that it either might be the VATS module or the lamp timer module. Those are the only things I can think of as being powered. It went on for 3-4 seconds.
Yep, thats odd for sure. Do the interior lights work?? Just wondering, you may be on to something with the lamp timer module.. I dont know what would be arcing with the vats, unless you reached through the window and unlocked the door or activated it some other way it should be unarmed when you unlocked the door with key keyless entry, whichever you have.
Hmmmm old school test was moving a AM radio around to get the area may sound dumb but ....it can help find a short that's not complete.. as in thing's still work
