I want to put my ECM back up in my dash, but would like to have the ability to put a chip in without pulling the ECM out,,,,,

I think you would need to build it. I have read many posts on people who try to make an extension cable, usually with poor results. Apparently, electrical interference is just too much. People have shielded the cables with aluminum foil and such, but I think its a crapshoot. Honstely, I believe there is a market for this, and I know if theres a market for it, Craig Moates would be building and selling it if it were simple. Good luck trying, and post your results.

You maybe able to build one using a standard ZIF socket and a shielded multiconductor cable rather than a standard pc style ribbon cable. But be aware that any EMI can and most likely will cause problems. As SBNova mentioned if it was do-able Craig would likely be selling it on his website. Even when I use my Romulator which has a ribbon cable connection to the prom socket of the ECM, I have had problems with EMI with it. Going to a shielded cable has so far fixed the problem. But my cable is short and any cable more than 18 inches causes problems. Its a very sensitive circuit dealing in millivolts. Any and I mean any induced transients reaks havoc on the system.

With some experimentation, you could try adding a ferrite bead to the one end of the cable to help knock down the EMI, or some decoupling capacitors. The problem you run with making the extention cable so long is that the cable has a degree of capacitance in it as you lengthen the cable you increase the capacitance which will start to round the leading edges off the data waveforms which in a bad case would make the system run "strange". With an Oscope and some experiementation you cold make it work.

I hope this helps

Would not the file checksum take care of the bits gone astray?
