I go to start my car, it cranks, even seems to fire OK at first but will not stay running.
The engine does not speed up. It just dies.
Any idea where I should start the troubleshooting?
Start by checking fuel pressure during the start up. I could be many things from fuel pump to relays. If you have a bad FP relay then the ECM relies on the oil pressure switch to provide voltage to the FP. If ECM doesnt see Oil pressure soon enough, it will not power the FP. Anyway that is just one scenario. If you don't have one, get a Helms manual and it will take you throught he proper diagnostics. Trying to fix a problem like this without a service manual is sorta like "blowing air" thru a screen door and trying to figure out which hole the air went through!

Except, even IF the relay is bad, it will continue to run off of the oil pressure switch. The ECM never "sees" oil pressure. The ECM activates the fuel pump relay. If the relay is bad, the oil pressure switch will provide power to the pump. If the engine lights right off, the relay is probably good. If it has to crank, some, then it's possible the relay is bad and you have to crank to build pressure (~4#)to close the contacts in the oil pressure switch. In any case, that doesn't explain the stalling AFTER it is running. As dwestsr said, check your fuel pressure.
If it will idle with your foot working the gas peddle than I would start looking at the IAC. Turn up your min idle screw and see if that cures the no idle. Mine took a nap for some reason and the car would die instantly and I was trying to leave. I cranked up the min idle and away I went. After I stopped at the parts jobber I started it up and the idle was a little high. Went home and reset the min and I was back to norm. Don't know what caused the nap, but I do know that turning up the min idle got me on my way.
