Default ""Removing the Manifold--Tpi""

I'm considering on removing the manifold on my 85 tpi. I dropped a small screw through an oil drain hole in drivers valve cover. I want to make sure it will something I can take off and put back on, I'm pretty confident that I can remove the fuel rail assembly, but if the distributer has to be removed ---then I'll need somebody else to do this job for me. I don't feel confortable at all messing with the timing setup. opinions please...thanks.

If you dropped it into the valve cover, you could take the VC off and it should be fine. Why are you taking the manifold off? Can you fish it out with a magnet? The VC oil holes lead downwards into the block. If it went that far, you will have to drop the oil pan to get it.

thats what i'm doing to my 91 i'm putting the accel manifold on. my mechinc said $400 to change. you do have to pull the distributor worse comes to worse if you can't do pay someone a few bucks to come to your house, or have it flatbeded somewhere local. to me $400 i'll take my chances.

Bad thing is the screw I dropped is not magnetic--cause I think I bumped it while tring to fish around for it with the magnet tool, You say the that oil drain goes STRAIGHT to the oil pan? doesn't go through any parts ??? thanks

You shouldn't have to pull the intake to retrieve that screw if a magnet won't do the job, drop the pan instead.

BTW, don't fear pulling the dist. Simply pull the dist cap, mark or note where the wires from the front are on the intake base, mark the location of the rotor on the dist base, lift the dist up till the rotor stops moving and again mark the location on the dist base.

Then when installing the dist. point the wires comming out the front in the same direction as originally noted/marked, orient the rotor to point to the second mark on the dist base and drop the dist into position. When full inserted into the base the rotor should now point to the first mark on the dist base.

This procedure will get timing close enough to start the engine and tweak it usiing a timing light.

Assuming you don't have it stuck somewhere in the oil passages, I would assume so

personally I think dropping the oilpan is harder than pulling the manifold. But it sounds like all he has to do is pull the valve cover

First, there is no way it could get into an oil passage, if he hasn't started the engine. And if he did, it would have to pass through the pick up screen and the oil pump. THAT ain't gonna happen! Odds are good that it can be retrieved by removing the valve cover. If your luck is bad, it could have passed through a push rod or oil drain back hole, and it is sitting in the valley. If it is non-magnetic, you MIGHT be able to get a hold of it with one of those little parts grabber tools. Otherwise, the distributor comes out and the manifold comes off. The odds of it being in the pan are between zero and none.

RACE ON!!!
