Hi guys, our club has been invited to some "speed trials" which will basically be run on an unused Airforce runway. Supposedly we have 2.3Km (1.4 miles) of strip to accelerate (and also brake ) on. Is that going to be far enough for an L98 to reach top speed? Yes, I'd really like to see 150mph Anyone else participated in this sort of event? Supposedly there will be a couple of Vipers/Diablos to run against (LOL!).
Oh yeah, check out our club shots from the same base...
way cool sanctuary!
beats me if thats enough room to get top speed AND stop in time... but it should be dang fast!!!! well over 100mph (heck stock can do 90mph in just a 1/4 mile drag strip).
wish I was there to see it.
I'm sure you'll have fun.

Heh, thanks mate [img]http]//www.corvetteforum.cc/ubb/biggrin.gif[/img] I'll make sure I take my camera (I'll at least have to get the speedo haha). Just wonder how the Diablos will go...God am I looking forward to this. Funnily enough if we hadn't had the photo shoot at the base (the previous weekend) we never would have known about it! It's invite only. Now where did I leave my helmet?
I think that plane in the back of those pictures will have all of you guys beat .... maybe even combined by the looks of that thing!

Hehe. It's old compared to your planes! It's an A4-K Skyhawk (probably Vietnam vintage), fitted with F-16 style avionics. They're just about to be mothballed. Really sad, actually. New Zealand will have no air-strike capability once they're gone [img]http]//www.corvetteforum.cc/ubb/frown.gif[/img] That's why we just had to get the Club photos last week. Luckily the Speed Trials will be run individually (not up against anything else land-based or flying). I do remember a Pitts-special running a rail here a while back. The rail took the Pitts off the line, but (of course) the plane won at the end of the quarter.

I'd guess you would at least see low 200's (km/h) over that distance. If you can, try get a feel for how the car brakes at high speed before you really have a go at it. You'll be surprised how much harder it is to pull the car up at those speeds.
Make sure your car is in tune beforehand. A few years back (when I'd only had the Vette for a short time) I had a chance to run flat out on a banked oval track and missed 150 mph by 2 mph . The next day I found out how out of tune may car was and realised that was probably holding me back from going faster. Maybe next time.
hey sanctuary,
I did a quick test on a program.
this is just a best guess but from a standing start to 1 mile (give ya .4 for braking hope its enough) should be in the 140mph range. it takes a lot of distance to get that last bit of top speed.
ps: check those brakes!

Julian, that's probably the largest collection of RHD Corvettes in the world!
Is your event strictly a straight line acceration/braking competition, or will it be a sort of high speed autocross?
In any case, if you are going to be in triple digits and expect to stop "rapidly", make sure that you *purge* all of your brake fluid, and install a good hi-temp dot 3 or 4 fluid. I think you should be able to get ATE Super in your part of the world. They make it in "Blue" and "Amber". Same stuff, but easier to identify "old" and "new" fluid. Also, if you can get a hold of some Performance Fricion race pads (90, 93, or 01 compounds) they *will* insure max speed reduction without trashing your rotors. I don't know if they are available in the pre-'88 pad sizes, but Porterfield in Calif. stocks all kinds of compounds for non popular backing plates, and can also make them up for you in various compounds. You an try these contact points for them: 800.537.6842, 949.548.4770, Fax: 949.548.7783. Good luck and keep us posted on the outcome!

No. I think 140-150 took about 3/4 mile in itself to do when I hit 151.
