From: Are you the bug or are you the windshield.....
I have seen many posts about people who have removed their radiator to get to the road debris that their car had picked up......
I was going to do the same to mine today, but a question has really perplexed me so I am passing until I find out some more info....
Where does this debris rest at????? Between the radiator and bumper????? Or between the fan and radiator?????? Should I be able to see a little to determine if it is necessary to do this process?????
Forgive me if I seem ignorant, but this is something that I have never done before, and I want to make sure that this is a procedure that really needs to be done on my car.....
It rests between the a/c condenser/radiator and the radiator. I heard about this on here too. I just took my radiator out as described in the Tech tips. It worked very well. My car runs about 20 degrees cooler. I never even thought it ran hot! I'm wondering now if it runs hot enough. It is often in the 160s even with the a/c on max. Have fun!
Its definately a worthwhile project I was really surprised at all the crap that was stuck between there and to my radiator, you definately have to pull the radiator and clean off the front of it my car runs almost 20 degrees cooler too plus its a freebee upgrade all it takes is a little time...definately would recommend.

well worth the effort you will be uphauled at how much can accumulate in there, I did mine and long ago no regrets.........
This is a job which should be done, especially if your vette is older. You cannot see the debris until you are in the middle of the job.
While the radiator is out it should be cleaned as well. A good cleaner is Simple Green, full strength. It gets road grime off of the radiator for better cooling. It is a simple straightfoward job.
I highly recommend that if you go through the hassle of getting it out, take it to a good radiator shop. They will clean it right, inside AND out, AND will test it for you so you can put it back in with confidence. That's what I did and I'm glad I did. It was short money, too. ($35)
Don't know what year you have, but if it is an LT1 I would START with the 3 7mm screws down low on each side of the cover. If you can't get these out, you can't get the radiator out and they are a royal PITA.
Husker Vette,
it's not imediately apparent until you really start paying attention to this area that there are in fact two radiators under the shroud.
the 'dead zone' is a one inch gap between the two. i have yet to really sit down and figure out how the junk gets through the first to settle on the second
I did mine as a result of having to change the A/C condensor. I wasn't even doing it because it was running hot, but it does run a good 20 degrees cooler now. Here is what came out of between mine:
All of those leaves, they ran about 1/3 of the way up the radiator, blocking quite a bit of air flow...
