I have an 89 and when the windows are rolled down the console will get extremely hot. Yet when the windows are rolled up the console will cool imediatly. Is this normal? I have just purchased the vette (my first and not my last, I am hooked!)and have many other questions if someone is willing to give a few minutes.
From: Are you the bug or are you the windshield.....
Can't help you with the console problem, but it sure doesn't sound right....... What part of the console is getting hot.... By the shifter, the compartment, etc.....
the entire console. The heat will draft out of the cup holder and the entire center will become so hot you really can't even touch it. The strage part is that when the windows are rolled up it will cool down withen a few minutes. It feels like heat from the motor or tranny is escaping through the center when there is no presure inside the car. Is there a cover that may be missing in my car?
You could have a covering or something missing. Is it an automatic or manual? If it's an automatic then you could be having tranny problems. Mine gets pretty warm, and it is a little normal for you to feel heat from the engine through the firewall. These things run hotter than most cars.
There is a seal where the shifter goes through the floor to the transmission, yours is either torn or improperly installed. It seems like 99% of the C4's that have had the transmission removed for servicing have not had this lower seal properly reinstalled, or worse, the mechanic just reinstalls a torn seal. I have run accross a lot of C4 owners that thought this was normal because other C4's were that way too - it is not normal, and its a pretty straight foward fix.
Heres a tip for everyone, NEVER LEAVE ANYTHING ON YOUR DASH!!! I left a CD and CD jewel box up there, and it melted!!! Luckly it didn't melt onto the dash its self..
The car has the six speed if that may matter. Also how hot should the car be running. Here in Denver at around the mid 90's during the day, the car will run between 197 and 210. But if I use the ac the car will run up to 240 (at least that is when I turn the ac off and the car returns to 200) is this normal or could that be part of the problem with the console.
On my '96 LT4 the console gets very hot also. I've also noticed that if the windows are up and the A/C is on that it doesn't get hot. I bought some dynamat and I'm going to pull the console out and line the tunnel with that (I'll fix the seal if that's torn while I'm in there). Hopefully that will reduce the heat some.
Under your console is your catalytic converter, on top of the converter is a heat shield. In most cases these shield will begin to rattle and become very annoying. Maybe yours was removed or altered. Could be a straight pipe was put on your car?
It is easy to check with a mirror.
