I have an 89 with 75k. I am the third owner. The second owner said he used regular oil and did not know what type of oil the original owner used. I am thinking on using Mobil 1. Is this O.K.? Any benefits or drawbacks? Any suggestions?

Bob, I bought an 87 with 72K on it last year and put Mobile 1 10-30 in after reading many positive comments on this forum. I have been thru 3 changes (3K miles each)and have had no problem with usuage or leaks. I feel better about the syn in this Texas heat. regards, Jim L

If your engine's oil has been changed regularly and is fairly clean inside there should be no problem. If however your engine has a lot of sludge, Mobile One could cause it to leak. Synthetic oils are extremely high detergent and are very efficient at cleaning and removing contaminants. When those contaminates are removed and they have become part of a gasket or seal gravity and a little pressure will do the rest. I just switched our 90 to Mobile One at 30K. The first owner used dino juice, but he changed it ever 2500 miles like a clock. I pulled the valve covers to replace the gaskets and could
see the top part of the engine was clean an assumed the bottom end to be like wise. I haven't had any leaks since the switch. Hope this helps, good luck.
Bill

For what it's worth...... After using Mobil 1 since I got my 95 two years ago, I changed to it in the wife's Mustang & our 1989 Blazer about 6 months ago. I have suffered no problems with either vehicle. Before I made the change in the Blazer, (129K) I got a puff of white smoke from the exhaust whenever I started it after it sat overnight or longer. I attributed that to bad valve seals, but I could be wrong. In any event, after my second Mobil 1 change, (At 3K) the white smoke at startup vanished. I'm assuming it lubricated the seals and softened them. But whatever the syn did, it cured that problem.

I've noticed on a couple of old vehicles that switching to synthetic has reduced oil consumption- my only guess is that the higher flash point of the synthetic may mean that extra oil around my valve seals that may have been burning before no longer does. I had a Izuzu diesel that went from burning a quart of dino every two tanks of fuel to a quart of synthetic every twenty- paid for the synthetic.

my oil pressure on my 86 (72K miles)was dangerously low when hot 7-5psi so the dealer thought to try some "Mobil1" like the newer c4's.didnt changed a thing.so we changed the oil pressure switch and the sending unit.now its where its suppose to be.but i still use the "Mobil1" i guess for added protection,it cant hurt..but your wallet

I have been using Mobil 1 in all my vehicles for over 10 years, no engine related problems ever since. AC Delco also makes a good synthetic element filter #PF35L for your Vette. Give it a try.

i bought my 85 with 33,000 miles and assume it was on dino. i switched to mobil 1 and noticed leakier valve covers, but those were fixed pretty easy.
plan on doing a couple of changes pretty soon after the switch to cleanse all of the nasty grime. i did a filter change 100 miles after the switch just for grins. if you do that, remember to add for the lost oil.
mobil 1 lowered my oil temp by ten degrees. i love it.
good luck, steven

I thought that all Corvettes (since 4th gen) came with Mobile 1 & that this is what the dealers into them? Is this an old wives tale or what?

Corvettes did not come with Mobile 1 in then until the introduction of the LT1 in 1992. Also the recommended viscosity remained at a 5W-30 multi-weight. So if you put Mobile 1 or any other synthetic oil, I would suggest using the recommended 5w-30 and not 10w-30.

You can run 10W-30 without any trouble depending on your location. I wouldn't go anything in the 40 or 50 range, but 10W will work just fine if it doesn't get too cold in your area.
