Just want to say one thing. The screen is not there to catch small debris. If it made it past the air filter, it is surely going to make it past that screen!!!
Well, maybe two things...
Ported MAFs are not good. They are essentially lying to your computer about the amound of airflow that you are receiving. This will be compensated over time with your BLM's, which will in turn screw up your WOT AFR by adding the BLM correction to it.
You can program the computer with new MAF tables in the LT1, but I don't think you can in the L98. As stated by SuperL98, the MAF is not a restriction at the point where 99% of this board runs. He is not even maxing it out with a SUPERCHARGER!!!
JMHO and experience!!! I have run ported MAF's, MAF ends and stock MAF's. I know what works and what does not.
I had mine ported a few years ago. I went to the track one week with stock MAF and ran 95.5 mph, two weeks later I ran in very simmiliar weather (less than 5 degrees) and Ported MAF, my ET and mph were up .1 and 1 mph. I don't know if it was the tunning of my chip, but it worked for my car.
There are too many other variables other than temp to come into play there. Barrometric pressure, humidity, track prep, tire pressure, tires, driver consistency. The only way that running day to day and comparing is going to do any good is if you have a weather station and record piles of runs. This will do all the corrections for you. Then you still have the driver consistency issue.
I have one of these ported MAF's also (came with my car when I bought it). When I was having Ed Wright burn a chip for my new setup he strongly suggested I put an original one back one. The reasoning is that the ECM can't accurately gauge the amount of air going in. Since more air is entering than the ECM knows, this has the effect of leaning the mixture. It's possible that the improvements people are seeing is due to the leaning of the A/F mixture. TPIS has shown in many cases that going slightly leaner can raise power in some cases. Frankly I'm not sure, I'm just thinking out loud.
