'96 Cat Breaking up

Anyone ever had the cat break up on them? I started having an exhaust leak type noise and then one day found an approximately 2.5" diameter chunk of honeycomb stuck in the rectangular exhaust tip. I have only the resonator after the cats so I guess it just worked itself back. Now the exhaust leak noise is a little worse but comes and goes. I am planning to take it to the dealership as soon as I can to get the cat replaced under warranty(federally mandated 8 year 80,000 mile on cats). Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and opinions on whether this is the source of the noise or if I have an exhaust leak as well. I'm guessing maybe restricted flow through the cat caused a gasket breach?
Now I'm thinking about longtubes if I still have a leak after replacing the cat.

Get the cats replaced ASAP. I have seen chunks come out like you said and they started brush fires along the road.... happened on I15 I think it was here in San Diego a couple of years back.
