I see lots of posts refering to cags and know that it relates to the 6 speeds. After owning an auto I am in the processing of buying a 1996 6-speed and was wondering what it is? Help in clarifying this would be appreciated.
Cags is a really annoying feature installed on the six speeds. I understand they had to put this thing on to get a little better gas mileage. It helped them avoid the gas guzzler tax or something.
Anyway it is a solenoid in the tranny that when shifting from 1st gear to 2nd and your RPM is under 1900 rpm, it blocks it force you to shift to 4th. A little little light will come on in the dash telling you it is enabled.
After two seconds of the clutch down it will let you in.
So what really happens to you'll bang into 2nd, get rejected and while you wrestle to get it in gear you wind up grinding 1st, then the two seconds are up and you slip into 2nd.
its really not anoying at all, just rev past 1900 i hardly ever had it engage on me..every once in a while, sitting in traffic and not paying attention it would come on, but i also sometimes used it to guide me into 4th when i wasnt in a hurry
