When I was removing my passanger side valve cover today, I noticed my a/c bracket was cracked. Could explain the snapping noise the car makes with the A/c on I believe it is aluminum and thinking about having my buddy tig it. Can it be done or should I just find another one.
I had the same problem with the AC bracket on mine ('85). New at the dealer bracket was only about $40. (from memory - and it was a couple of years ago)
i weld up aluminum castings at work all the time. make sure its
cleaned real good and ground to a v. dont use a wire wheel to
clean it, contaminates from the wheel will impregnate the surface of the aluminum.and you wont get a good weld.

Okay all you "welders", what filler material should the repair be made with?? I.e., what alloy is the casting? 356 or some other alloy? No weld will last long if the incorrect filler is used.
You can't just grab some aluminum rod and start burning....
I'd buy a new unit. It's a Corvette, after all.
Just get a good used one from the vette salvage link on the left side. The little bit of $$ you spend would be well worth it to have yours welded even if the weld works.
