Ok, I'm pretty sure I've posted before about how every now and then my car will crank and crank before it starts. Usually after I've run it and it hasn't been sitting long. Somebody said this might be a leaking injector, loss of fuel pressure, etc. Twice now the car has done something different. About a week ago at night the car had been sitting all day and when I got in and started to go it didn't want to run. It was trying to sputter around 500 rpms. It eventually picked up and worked just fine. A few days ago when I got off work it did the same thing, this time I wasn't able to save it. It sputtered and fought, I hit the gas and *&^&( it just died. When I cranked it again it did it's trick of cranking for a few seconds, then when it fired, it ran just fine.
This does sound more and more like a fuel pressure issue, due to a possible leaking injector. So anway, I've got a source of NEW 24# SVO injectors for $150. I will meet the guy at the track on August 11th to pick those up. In the mean time I have a new fuel filter and a bottle of injector cleaner that I'll probably do one night this week, or next weekend. I figured I would change my filter and then run that bottle of cleaner through it before I replace the injectors, that way if it doesn't work, or if it manages to get trash in them somehow it will ruin the OLD injectors, not my new ones.
Anybody else have any ideas on this one? The car has never given me a problem after it's running, just this crap at startup and even that isn't too frequent, but it is getting more so.
Nathan,I am always seeking solutions to vette problems on this forum. But it seems as though most people want to talk about how fast they can go or who has the coolest rims. Not what this section of the forum is about. There is a whole section set-up for BS. This is the tech section for tech questions.I know how frustrating it can be to locate and cure a problem(I own an '85).
As for your cranking problem, I have a '70 Z28 that was had to start because the starter got too hot from the heat of the headers.(Probably not your problem.)
It sounds like you're on the right track. I would check the fuel pump, the filter, timing, fire to injectors, and anything else I could think of before buying injectors. When you resolve this problem, please post the solution.
As for you other guys, I don't care how fast you can go!
It did it's little hard start trick to me once before we did the mods, so I feel pretty confident it's nothing we've done to it. I'm gonna get a fuel pressure gauge and an air/fuel ratio guage so I can better diagnose stupid problems like this. I am about 99% sure this is fuel pressure related, it would just be nice to be able to prove it with a gauge.
Your problems sound alot like mine. Mine has a random hard start problem (87). My next move is to clean the TB and maybe then replace the injectors if needed.
I do know that my timing was way off so I fixed that 2 weeks ago. It helped a little.
Please keep us posted. Someone posted last week with the same problems you had and new injectors did the trick.
Cool, will do it. I've just finished ordering my dual pillar guage pods and an Air/fuel and fuel pressure guage. The pressure guage is on back order, so it won't be here until after I get my injectors, but if it does it again I will be able to tell if it's a fuel pressure thing.
My dad's just gonna LOVE the guages He hates my shifter and won't even ask what I've done to the engine. He just know's it took a week to do it. He's just not the car type.

Nathan, As posted above check the T/Body . Before replacing the injector's put a fuel pressure gauge on the end of the fuel rail. It's got a cap over it and a schrader valve below the cap.Look's like a bicycle tire valve. If the pressure go's down walla, you have found it.HTH

Ok fair enough, I do really believe it's a fuel pressure thing, but I think it is fuel pressure as it is related to the fuel injectors. If one of them is leaking, it will let the pressure bleed off, and flood that cylinder at the same time. Call me crazy, how would the throttle body gasket have anything to do with it, when this doesn't happen all the time, in fact I would dare say it is rare?
