I'm not sure how much time I really have in the actual removal. I've spent a good 8-10 hours playing around as I thought I had a bad lifter and tore into the top end.
The top bolts that hold the bell housing to the engine are a real pain in the butt! I spent 2 hours trying to get them out alone!
mackeyred96 recently(last winter) had a similar project to you.. He went with a Cartek Cam/Heads/Intake package and took everything out/put back in Himself. If He can do it, you can too. I was nervous in a similar situation... re-painting my car last year. I updated the styling to '96 panels. The key is to mark/video everything where it was and where it goes back to.
You'll be fine. Let us know how things progress. Nice pics BTW.. I LOVE ADMIRAL BLUE! I re-did mine from stock Flame Red to Admiral Blue! SWEET!

You can do a 383 or a 396 at this point. If you are going to go all forged components, the price is the same either way. The wear difference seems to be minimal between the two. Have you ever though about going sold roller? You could do that, get Stage II heads and cam and have more power than you could imagine on tap at any given time. The low end torque would be unbelievable!!! The high end HP would be awesome!!! The outlay is not that much when you are undertaking a whole rebuild!!!
Anyway, just a though...
