I have an 86 c4 and for some reason my interior brake light is coming on. I will start driving, no light - first time I press the brakes, light comes on. Usually some time later during the drive, the light goes off. Very strange - only variable since I've gotten the car is colder weather. Perhaps brake fluid? Any ideas?
I'd be checking your master cylinder... it may be sensing that you don't have the correct pressure in the brake system. if you see the fluid is low it could also mean you are close to needing brakes as well...

Check your fluid level and check out the switch for a problem.
My e-brake wasnt entirely disengaged once and it caused
an intermittent flashing of the brake light as you describe..
Had to push the button in and make sure lever was in the
down position all the way..
My E-brake handle was also causing my Brake light to flash and come on intermittantly. I took the handle cover off and the piece of metal that breaks contact had bent over the years. I bent it back with a pair of pliers and it has worked ever since.
Yes, I have an automatic, and the parking break is on the left of the driver's side seat of course. The strange thing is, I push the button, try to pull it up - it doesn't budge. Something is obviously wrong with it, and, dumb me, I didn't check the e-brake when I bought the car because the light wasn't on, didn't come on, and actually hasn't come on for a month. When the light did come on - the one in the middle console with the (P) and (!) symbols - I tried pushing the e-brake or parking brake down even though I couldn't budge it up, and nothing happened. It doesn't really go down that much either. I didn't wanna push the button and yank up too much, and brake it ya know?
Ah well, I guess perhaps the parts manual will give me some insight on how to take that ebrake apart and see why its not moving. I have no clue. Hope to get the parts manual soon.
