Default HP comparo ???

this is a rather odd question that I am curious about...

The GM ZZ4 motor that can be purchased at virtually any speed shop is advertised as 355hp and 405 lbs of torque. It has 10:1 compression, 170cc heads, smaller valves, cam (i think) and lower quality parts compared to my LT4. Why is this motor, on paper at least, seem to out perform my motor that, on paper, is a better motor... or are my facts comfused???

the ZZ4 is not a smog motor.

It is not technically legal for newer cars... even tho it's quite commonly installed in mid 80s C4s.

I would not say the parts are "lower quality", just different.

That ZZ4 horsepower is rated with a carb, and that ZZ4 cam has a bit more lift than a stock C4 cam. Definitely not smog legal.

I've seen a few ZZ4 short block motors come through and they haven't really impressed me all that much. The ones I've seen have had the TPI intake bolted back on top of them, which pretty much made them suck *****.

It's all about the right combination.

ZZ4 is carbed and has a slightly bigger cam. GM doesnt have to make it smog legal, however with tuning it can easily be made legal.

Its probably also rated with headers and without cats attached, so its going to drop when you put all the OE exhaust on.
